Description
The VB-80 drilling swivel is designed to deliver drilling fluid from the pump to the bottom of the well during rotary and turbine drilling operations, while also allowing the drill string to rotate. It is intended for operation in temperate climatic conditions in accordance with GOST 16350-80.
The VB-80 swivel consists of two main assemblies: a stationary assembly suspended from the drilling hook and a rotating assembly connected to the drill string through the Kelly bar (square drive).
The stationary assembly consists of a steel cast housing with two lifting lugs for suspension from the hook. The upper part of the housing is closed by a flange to which the stuffing box cap is attached. The cap is fitted with a gooseneck (outlet) for connecting the drilling pressure hose.
The rotating assembly includes the swivel stem, which is mounted inside the housing on three bearings. The main spherical thrust-radial bearing supports the loads transmitted from the drill string suspended from the stem during drilling. At the upper end, the stem is supported by an angular contact ball bearing that carries the weight of the stationary swivel components as well as the dynamic loads generated during drilling. A radial roller bearing located at the lower part of the housing provides centering of the stem within the swivel body.
A distinctive feature of the VB-80 swivel is its pressure packing assembly with a floating pressure (mud) tube. The pressure packing consists of three self-sealing V-type rubber seals installed in the rotating housing and a short, easily replaceable mud tube. The pressure (mud) tube is fastened to the upper part of the stem and to the gooseneck by means of quick-release trapezoidal-thread nuts. The packing seals are housed within the upper and lower packing nuts. The entire packing assembly is enclosed inside the packing cap. The threaded connections of the packing assembly allow the complete packing unit, together with the pressure tube, as well as individual seals, to be removed and replaced quickly.
The swivel housing also serves as an oil reservoir for the bearings. Oil is filled through an opening in the housing, sealed with a plug that also serves to check the oil level. The sealing system ensures the oil reservoir remains leak-tight while preventing dirt and contaminants from entering.
