Description
The SC chain spider (also known as a chain spider elevator, safety clamp, elevator clamp, safety collar, wedge grip, multi-segment safety clamp, or chain safety clamp) is designed to prevent drill pipes with flush joints, drill collars, and other tubulars from falling into the well during make-up or break-out of the drill string. It is also used for gripping and safely supporting downhole screw motors in a vertical position during assembly into the bottom-hole assembly (BHA) or when adjusting the bend angle of the spindle section. These devices are ideal for use in special applications as an elevator shoulder when lifting liners with gravel-pack screens, flush-joint tubing, and similar equipment that does not have an elevator recess for conventional elevators. The chain spider can also be used as a combination of slips and an elevator during casing running operations or to simplify handling of drill pipes and casing heads during installation.
The SC chain spider consists of individual articulated segments connected together. Each segment is equipped with an individual tapered die that serves as the gripping element. The die is spring-loaded. When the chain spider is tightened, each die provides an initial secure grip on the pipe surface. If the pipe begins to slip or the load on the dies increases, the tapered design forces each die to wedge more tightly against the pipe surface, increasing the gripping force and preventing further movement. Each segment with its tapered die is fully interchangeable, allowing the chain spider to be easily adapted to virtually any pipe diameter. The use of a special alloy for the dies ensures long service life and reliable wedge-type gripping performance.
